Villalba de la Lampreana
Village
Villalba de la Lampreana is a village of 212 inhabitants in the Zamora region of Tierra de Campos, within the Lagunas de Villafáfila nature reserve, of which the laguna Honda is one of the most emblematic spots. The name alludes to the whitish colour of the salt-flat areas the locals call Las Salinas, where salt was worked from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages; Lampreana recalls that the monks of Sahagún bred lampreys in these lagoons for their Lenten refectories. Its history is bound up with the Order of Santiago, as shown by the Santiago crosses on the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which also bears a Renaissance altarpiece from 1536. The village also keeps one of the finest dovecotes in the province.
