Arquillinos
Village
Arquillinos is a hamlet of 105 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Tierra del Pan. The Roman remains found at the sites of Las Torrecillas and El Torreón, together with the necropolis of Las Paredes, show the antiquity of its settlement, although the present-day village arose from the medieval repopulation by the Leonese kings, when it became a lordship of the archbishop of Santiago. In 1588 Philip II sold it to Francisco García de Villalpando, and in the eighteenth century his descendant Melchor de Guadalfajara Eraso obtained the title of Count of Castroterreño. Its church of San Tirso, with a brick bell-gable, holds in its main altarpiece paintings from the first quarter of the sixteenth century depicting the life of the titular saint, and preserves another rococo altarpiece with panels from the old altar of Santiago.
