What to see and do in Cabañas de Sayago

Cabañas de Sayago
Village
Cabañas de Sayago is a Zamora village of 143 inhabitants on the boundary between Sayago and Tierra del Vino, whose landscape shares features with both comarcas: here neither the granite outcrops nor the stone enclosures typical of Sayago appear, and the houses are not scattered as in other villages of western Sayago. Its name recalls the resting huts of the transhumant shepherds who crossed here on the cañada Occidental Leonesa, laid out over a Roman road; the Ruta de la Plata, between Mérida and Astorga, also passes through its territory. The vine is its main feature: its vineyards fall under the Tierra del Vino de Zamora designation of origin, and its spirits are renowned locally. In January the traditional pig slaughter (matanza) is still carried out.
San Miguel and the end of the grape harvest
Food and drink
On 29 September the village celebrates San Miguel, a festival that traditionally coincided with the end of the grape harvest; its wines and spirits are protected by the Tierra del Vino de Zamora designation.
