Castronuevo
Village
Castronuevo is a village in Zamora province with 216 inhabitants, bathed by the river Valderaduey, a tributary of the Duero, whose irrigation also allowed the cultivation of sugar beet. At the site of El Juncal, three dolmens aligned parallel to the river were documented, an unusual case; over these first settlements the Vaccaean hillfort of La Villa was later built. Fortified in the Middle Ages as part of the resettlement process of the kings of León on the frontier with Castile, between 1188 and 1214, it followed the typical scheme of a quadrangular castle from which the town's wall extended. In 1391 the lordship of Castronuevo was created, with Pedro Gómez de Porres as its first lord. It preserves a Renaissance church with a slender brick tower and an 18th-century bridge.
