Cerecinos del Carrizal
Village
Cerecinos del Carrizal is a hamlet of 111 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, bathed by the river Salán, today called the río Salado. Its present-day origin is due to the medieval resettlement by the kings of León; the first written mention dates from 1153, when it appears as a vassal holding of the monastery of San Martín de Castañeda, and in 1183 King Ferdinand II of León handed it over to the Order of St John. It was a village of long wine-growing tradition, with numerous wine cellars dug into the earth, until the 19th-century phylloxera destroyed the vineyards and left agriculture as the main activity. Its church of San Salvador, from the second half of the 18th century, preserves in the porch three 16th-century columns from the original church and a gilded baroque main altarpiece with the Saviour in the central niche.
