Villalazán
Village
Villalazán is a village of 241 inhabitants with aligned streets, in the Tierra de Alba region, beside the river Duero, in the province of Zamora; according to local tradition, its present site is the result of a move prompted by the river's floods. Its name may come from Arabic, either from a word for a reddish horse or mare, or, more probably, from the personal name Hassan. On its municipal land lies the Valcuevo archaeological zone, whose remains include the Roman camp of Albocela, discovered in 1992, considered among the most important of Roman times in the province of Zamora. Resettled in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, in the Early Modern period it was part of the Partido del Vino, and by the mid-19th century it had 152 inhabitants.
