Algodre
Village
Algodre is a village of 131 inhabitants situated in the Zamora comarca of the Tierra del Pan, some 16 kilometres north-east of the provincial capital. Its name may come from the Arabic gadir, pool or pond, referring to the stream that also gives its name to the small valley on which it sits, dominated by the teso Mayo, 784 metres high. The climate is continental Mediterranean, with cold winters and intense summer drought; almond trees and reforestation pines grow on the tesos, and on the riverbanks, bulrush beds, reed beds and poplar groves. Its church of Nuestra Señora de Belén, from the seventeenth century, preserves an earlier main chapel with ribbed vaulting, and its altarpiece is presided over by a thirteenth-century seated figure of the Virgen de Belén, reworked in the sixteenth.
