What to see and do in Peleagonzalo

Peleagonzalo
Village
Peleagonzalo is a village in Zamora province, situated on the bank of the Duero, between Toro and the provincial capital, with a boundary of thirteen square kilometres entirely surrounded by that of Toro. Its name would recall Pelayo González, a magnate close to King Ordoño IV of León, who is said to have led the medieval resettlement of the place, then situated on the banks of the Duero. From the Leonese Cortes of 1188 onward it was represented by the city of Toro, on whose archpriesthood it depended, and the Battle of Toro, a decisive episode of the war of succession between Isabella the Catholic and Juana la Beltraneja, was fought in its fields. On the night of 28 December 1860 a flood of the Duero destroyed the village on its original site. It now has 286 inhabitants.
The battlefields of Toro
Historical milestone
The fields of Peleagonzalo, on the bank of the Duero between Toro and the Zamora provincial capital, with its municipal boundary entirely surrounded by that of Toro, were the actual scene of the clash of 1 March 1476 between the troops of the Catholic Monarchs and those of Afonso V of Portugal and his son, Prince John; the battle remained undecided on the ground, with a Portuguese victory on one flank and a Castilian one on the other, but it morally decided the Castilian war of succession by representing a great political victory for Isabella and Ferdinand, which secured the throne for Isabella and the union of the crowns of Castile and Aragon.
The village that moved to a hill
Curiosity
A flood of the Duero destroyed the built fabric on 28 December 1860 and on 29 September 1862 the new village was inaugurated on top of the hill of San Benito; the municipal district is entirely surrounded by that of Toro.
