Villaralbo
Village
Villaralbo is a municipality in the Tierra de Alba region, in the province of Zamora, beside the river Duero, with a fertile irrigated plain. Its name may come from the contraction of the Latin term villar — a farming holding smaller than a villa, often linked to Roman remains — and the Arabic patronymic albo, or from the Latin words villar and albus, white. Its closeness to the Duero favoured early settlement: at the El Juncal site, two hundred metres from the river, a burial from the Cogotas I culture was found, dating from between 1700 and 1000 BC, and at Los Montones a flint axe was found. From Roman times the site of El Alba survives, a villa between Villaralbo and Villalazán, today levelled except for its necropolis. It has 1,782 inhabitants.
