What to see and do in Sanzoles

Sanzoles
Village
Sanzoles is a wine-growing town of 454 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, which besides the main settlement also includes that of Valdemimbre; its name comes from San Zoilo, a 4th-century martyr from Córdoba whose devotion reached these Leonese lands through the Mozarabs who fled al-Andalus and resettled the village in the Middle Ages. The Roman Ruta de la Plata passed through the municipal area, and on some façades scallop shells recalling the Way of Saint James are preserved. It formed part of the Partido del Vino de Zamora, and since 1833 has belonged to that province. It preserves quarters of wine cellars and wine presses cut into the rock, and every 26 December brings out into the streets El Zangarrón, a winter mummers' figure declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (an official Spanish designation for festivities of special tourist interest), during which the young conscripts ask for the aguinaldo.
The Zangarrón of Sanzoles
Activity
Every 26 December, the day of San Esteban, the Zangarrón comes out in a chequered brown and white costume, a coloured apron and a black mask with a red nose, accompanied by the young men who ask for the Christmas box from house to house.
The Church of San Zoilo
Monument
Of sandstone and austere Neoclassical design, it bears the date 1830 inscribed on the north doorway and preserves a Baroque altarpiece; in the village there remain stone houses with carved lintels and cellars dug into the rock.
