Village
Fresno de la Ribera is a village in the Alfoz de Toro area, seventeen kilometres from Zamora, set at 698 metres on the right bank of the Duero, between the river and the Teso de Geroma, in a continental-climate zone with winters of hard frosts and fog. Its founding goes back to the medieval resettlement, and on 14 August 1139 Alfonso VII of León granted the town to the church of Santa María de Toro and to Bishop Bernardo of Zamora; from the Leonese Cortes of 1188 onward it was represented there by the city of Toro. By the mid-19th century it had 448 inhabitants, against 326 today. Its parish church holds a Romanesque crucifix and a main altarpiece from the 17th century.
