Gema
Village
Gema is a municipality in the province of Zamora, in Castilla y León, with 201 inhabitants. The place name, documented since the 12th century in the archives of the monastery of Valparaíso as Xema or Sema, may derive from the term Salmas cited in the Fuero de Valle of 1094. At the site of El Cementerio, a Roman settlement inhabited between the 2nd and 5th centuries has been documented, from which the parish priest Antonino Asensio Ureña recovered thousands of items donated in 1988 to the Museo Provincial de Zamora. Already in the Middle Ages, as part of the Kingdom of León, the castle of Gema may have existed, with whose stones the church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 18th century. The village also preserves a three-arched bridge of Roman origin and the Pino de Gema, a tree listed under special protection.
