Casaseca de las Chanas
Village
Casaseca de las Chanas is a wine-growing village of 373 inhabitants in the Tierra del Vino comarca, nine kilometres from the provincial capital, Zamora. Its name joins the Latin casa and siccus, alluding to the lack of water, with chanas, the Leonese plural of llana, a stretch of flat, raised ground. Resettled in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, it was part during the early modern period of the Zamora Partido del Vino. Agriculture, and in particular viticulture, remains its main activity: it has several wineries, among them Bodegas Fariña, whose wines rank among the best in the province after those of Toro. Its monumental 16th-century church of San Juan Bautista has three naves on Ionic columns, and at the entrance to the village a traditional wine press is on display.
