Molacillos
Village
Molacillos is a village of 223 inhabitants, founded in the Middle Ages by the kings of León to consolidate their position in the Valderaduey basin, who brought Mozarabs from the south to resettle hamlets such as Merendeses, who came from Mérida, or Alcoba. The cathedral Chapter held influence over these lands from the 12th century, and in 1230 granted a charter to the inhabitants of Merendeses that spurred the building of mills on the river. Remains of a Roman camp are preserved in the municipal area at the Teso de la Mora, with two unusual cisterns, along with Chalcolithic finds. Its church of San Martín, a monumento histórico-artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) since 1982, is a rarity of Levantine Baroque paid for by Archbishop Andrés Mayoral, a son of the village, who sent Valencian architects to build it.
