Cubillos
Village
Cubillos is a village in the Tierra de Alba comarca, in the province of Zamora, located nine kilometres from the provincial capital, on the plain watered by the Prado stream, a tributary of the Valderaduey. It has 294 inhabitants. The earliest evidence of settlement in its territory dates from the late 3rd century BC, and the first written reference is from 1192, when King Alfonso IX of León handed the town, then called Cubelos, to the Order of Santiago; it belonged to the León-Santiago bishopric until this was dissolved in 1873 and it passed to the diocese of Zamora. It came to have two parishes, the vanished one of San Juan Bautista and the present one of Santa María de la Asunción, from the 16th century though with older remains, which holds a 13th-century carving of the Virgin.
