Monfarracinos
Village
Monfarracinos is a municipality in Tierra del Pan, in the province of Zamora, next to the provincial capital, with 998 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name, formerly Monzarracinos, is a place name made up of an apocope of "monte" and the personal or ethnic name Sarracinus, very common in the Middle Ages, especially among the Mozarab population; over time, popular confusion between the sounds z and f favoured the shift to the current form. Scholars rule out the name being a direct reference to a settlement of Saracens, since it does not fit the area's place-naming customs nor has any comparable precedent. Its church of San Martín de Tours preserves a Baroque ashlar bell-gable with three round-arched openings, as well as a censer and a crucifix from the 17th century.
