Benegiles
Village
Benegiles is a village of 266 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages to consolidate their positions in the Valderaduey river basin. Its church of Santo Tomás preserves 12th-century Romanesque corbels and a chancel with 16th-century ribbed vaulting; the 18th-century main altarpiece houses in its central niche the Gothic carving of Nuestra Señora tras el Río, from the 14th century with Romanesque echoes. Also kept are a rococo antependium with a relief of San José and two rococo altarpieces, one with San Antonio Abad and San Blas and the other with a Mannerist Christ and an 18th-century carving of Santa Águeda. The municipality also preserves several deserted medieval villages, such as Carricueva, Villamunio and Figueruela.
