What to see and do in Bretó

Bretó
Village
Bretó sits on a hillock in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, from which the confluence of the Esla, Órbigo and Tera rivers is seen. On its territory there was an Iron Age hillfort, reoccupied as a fortification around the 12th century, and the place-name itself is thought to recall the old Roman way-station of Preterion, mentioned in the Ravenna Cosmography. It also appears in the Hitación de Wamba, and after the victory of Alfonso III at the battle of la Polvorosa, in the year 878, it was resettled within the Kingdom of León. It depended on the monks of the monastery of Moreruela, some remains of which still survive nearby, and in 1167 Ferdinand II incorporated it into the alfoz of Benavente. With 163 inhabitants, every 19 April its residents climb in pilgrimage to the chapel of the Virgin of la Pedrera.
