Moreruela de Tábara
Village
Moreruela de Tábara is a municipality of 290 inhabitants in Tierra de Alba, province of Zamora, with the village of Santa Eulalia de Tábara. There stands El Castillón, a Romanised castro on a hill beside the river Esla, with possible occupation since the Iron Age and cave paintings of schematic art. Some research places at this site the second monastery founded in the 9th century by San Froilán and San Atilano, which came to house two hundred people before being destroyed by Almanzor; pieces from that monastery may have been incorporated into the present parish church. From the 10th century the place was incorporated into the Kingdom of León, and in 1371 into the lordship of Tábara. The Romanesque church of San Miguel preserves a wheel rose window and a latticed window from the 9th or 10th centuries.
