Bretocino
Village
Bretocino is a municipality of 192 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y los Valles, in the province of Zamora, situated in the Valverde valley. Its name derives from that of neighbouring Bretó, with the Leonese diminutive -ino, for having had a smaller population at the time of its founding or resettlement. This is linked to the victory, in the year 878, of the armies of Alfonso III at the battle of la Polvorosa, which brought the place into the Kingdom of León; in the early modern period it belonged to the Lands of the Count of Benavente, within the Merindad de Valverde. Its parish church is dedicated to Saint Paul and holds a beautiful altarpiece inside; the village celebrates the festivities of Saint Paul, on 25 January, and Saint Mark, on 25 April.
