Arcenillas
Village
Arcenillas is a village of 450 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, situated on a rise seven kilometres south of the capital, in the comarca of the Tierra del Vino, between the Duero and Guareña rivers. It is known for its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (a Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1982, which houses on its altar fourteen Hispano-Flemish panels that Fernando Gallego painted between 1490 and 1494 for the main altarpiece of Zamora cathedral; the Cabildo Catedralicio sold them to the village in 1712 together with the Custodia. Its name comes from the Vulgar Latin ilicina, holm oak, evolved through dissimilation from a form such as Erzinillas.
