What to see and do in El Maderal

El Maderal
Village
El Maderal is a village in Zamora province in the La Guareña region, with 172 inhabitants, founded at the end of the 12th century as a rearguard of the Leonese frontier on the river Guareña, facing the kingdom of Castile; its first documented mention dates from 1185, in the reign of Ferdinand II of León, who at that time reorganised the territories south of the Duero. In its centre a small Jewish quarter was established, one of the few Zamora settlements whose Jewish population is attested in the sources. Set in a small valley formed by the Talanda stream, a tributary of the Duero, and several seasonal streams, it belonged in the Early Modern period to the Partido del Vino of the province of Zamora. Its parish church, dedicated to Santa María Magdalena, is mainly Gothic in design.
