What to see and do in San Miguel de la Ribera

San Miguel de la Ribera
Village
San Miguel de la Ribera is a Zamoran village of 244 inhabitants, in the comarca of La Guareña, formerly known as Aldea del Palo. That name comes from the Franciscan convent that San Pedro de Alcántara founded next to the village, under the patronage of St Teresa of Ávila, on an estate belonging to doña Guiomar de Ulloa; inquisitorial trials were held there. Tradition has it that St Teresa, who spent a night in the village's Casa del Mayorazgo, lost her rings while drinking from a spring now known as the Fuente de las Santanillas. The municipality, which belonged to the province of Toro until 1833, experienced its greatest economic development in the 17th century thanks to viticulture, today protected by the Toro Designation of Origin. Only the ruins of the Franciscan convent remain today.
The convent of San Pedro de Alcántara
Monument
Founded by San Pedro de Alcántara with the support of Santa Teresa de Jesús on a property of doña Guiomar de Ulloa, it is the most notable episode in the religious history of this village of La Guareña.
The Romanesque Christ of San Miguel
Monument
The parish church, of great stone fabric, preserves a beautiful Romanesque Christ; on the edge of the built-up area, the hermitage of the Humilladero has been rehabilitated in recent years by the neighbourhood.
The more than a hundred dug-out wine cellars
Curiosity
The municipal district preserves more than a hundred underground cellars dug out of the stone, today in a poor state of conservation, witnesses to the wine-growing heyday the village reached during the seventeenth century and that fed several generations.
The malvasía and muscatel of San Miguel
Food and drink
In its vineyards the white varieties malvasía and moscatel are grown and, among the reds, garnacha and tinta de Toro; the September harvest and the Christmas slaughter mark the village's year.
