What to see and do in Argujillo

Argujillo
Village
Argujillo is a village in the province of Zamora, in the La Guareña region, whose name comes from the Latin Arbuscellum, a diminutive referring to a wooded spot. Resettled by the Leonese kings in the Middle Ages, it was granted on 29 April 1211 by Alfonso IX of León to the Order of the Temple, becoming part of the Templar commandery of Zamora, and in 1558 it was recognised as a town. On its land Roman-era burials have been found, among them an anthropomorphic tomb carved in granite. The village once had three chapels which ended up being used as a quarry to build the parish church. With 215 inhabitants, who live from farming, livestock and the service sector in the city of Zamora, it celebrates La Pega on 9 February and the planting of the May tree on 30 April.
The thirty-two-metre tower of Argujillo
Monument
The church of the Asunción, of a single nave and of the end of the sixteenth century, is crowned by a tower of thirty-two metres finished in 1819; it houses four bells of more than five hundred kilos cast in Salamanca in 1925.
The Santo Cristo de la Oliva
Curiosity
The church holds this image of Byzantine air; to raise the building the materials of three vanished hermitages were reused, those of Santa Marina, San Telmo and the Santo Cristo del Humilladero.
Argujillo handed over to the Templars
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León handed Argujillo to the Order of the Temple in 1211; centuries later, on 19 July 1558, a royal warrant issued in Valladolid recognised the place as having the status of villa.
The Pega of 9 February
Activity
On 9 February La Pega is celebrated, a festival peculiar to the village; on 30 April the maypole is planted and from 13 to 15 August the Assumption is celebrated beside the pelota court inaugurated on 15 August 1959.
