El Cubo de Tierra del Vino
Village
El Cubo de Tierra del Vino is a village in the province of Zamora, in the Tierra del Vino, 32 kilometres from the provincial capital, with 294 inhabitants, at 845 metres above sea level. It is the first Zamora town reached by pilgrims on the Vía de la Plata Way of St James entering from Salamanca. It may have been the Sabaria of the Roman chronicles; recorded as deserted in the 12th century, Alfonso VII of León re-founded it, linking it to the monastery of Valparaíso. Its name refers to a comarca once rich in vineyards, decimated by phylloxera in the 19th century, of which numerous underground wine cellars remain today. Its church, dedicated to Santo Domingo de Guzmán, preserves only the bell-gable from its original fabric, and in front of it there has stood since 2005 a wayside cross that replicates the one at Santa Marta de Tera.
