What to see and do in Villamor de los Escuderos

Villamor de los Escuderos
Village
Villamor de los Escuderos is a village in the province of Zamora, on the border with Salamanca, with 362 inhabitants according to the 2025 census. Its name, documented as Villa Mayor or Villa Maor since 1259, probably derives from a Leonese evolution of “Villamayor”. Repopulated by the kings of León as part of the resettlement of La Guareña, it remained in the Middle Ages under the direct control of the bishop of Zamora, and in the early modern period was incorporated into the province of Toro, represented in the Leonese Cortes since 1188. With the creation of the present-day provinces in 1833, it passed to that of Zamora, within the Leonese Region. In the mid-19th century the town had a recorded population of 1008 inhabitants, more than the round thousand that local memory recalls.
