What to see and do in Mayalde

Mayalde
Village
Mayalde is a municipality in the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, with 140 inhabitants, situated on the calzada of El Cubo del Vino, halfway between El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino and Peñausende, on a territory of about 44 km² at 875 metres above sea level. Its name comes from mayal, a traditional farming tool for threshing rye. Its elevated position and its toponym, of possibly Germanic or pre-Celtic Indo-European origin, point to a settlement predating the feudal powers; the locality was integrated by the Leonese monarchy in the medieval repopulations and is documented for the first time in 1143. Its ashlar church, dedicated to San Benito Abad, has a classical transept and Romanesque buttresses, and preserves a sixteenth-century crucifix.
