Piedrahíta de Castro
Village
Piedrahíta de Castro is a town in the province of Zamora, located some 24 kilometres north of the provincial capital, with 104 inhabitants. Its name comes from the Latin petra ficta, a driven stone, used to mark out boundaries, a place name that recurs with variants throughout the Romania. It sits on a plain once dotted with small lagoons — de Carvajal, Luenga, de las Mayas — whose existence is recorded in the old land surveys and visitation records of its church. It belonged to the Santiago commandery of Castrotorafe, created in 1176 by a grant from Fernando II of León to the Order of Santiago, on which its church and three hospitals also depended, San Sebastián, La Vera Cruz and Nuestra Señora de la O; a visitation by the order in 1528 found the latter two in poor condition and ordered them merged into one.
