What to see and do in Malva

Malva
Village
Malva is a hamlet in the Toro district, in Zamora province, at 713 metres above sea level, with 92 inhabitants and an economy based on farming and livestock. The earliest traces of human presence in its area date to the Palaeolithic, though the village's founding is owed to the medieval resettlements carried out by the kings of León: it began beside its hermitage and over time shifted toward the neighbouring valley. By 1143 it already appeared as a boundary marker of the Alfoz de Toro. It came to have a hospital and a Vera Cruz (True Cross) wayside hermitage. It preserves the 15th-century church of San Miguel Arcángel, with baroque altarpieces, and the hermitage of the Virgen del Tovar, a former medieval parish church that holds a 13th-century doorway and a 16th-century Gothic crucifix.
The hermitage of the Virgen del Tovar
Monument
Of Baroque fabric with a reused thirteenth-century doorway, it holds the image of the Virgin and a sixteenth-century Gothic crucifix; the church of San Miguel Arcángel, of the fifteenth, completes the religious heritage.
The dovecotes and windmill of Malva
Curiosity
The municipal district preserves old dovecotes, a windmill and several springs of interest, in a municipality of 27.33 square kilometres that in 2025 had 92 inhabitants and 3.37 per square kilometre.
The festival of the Virgen del Tovar
Activity
From 12 to 15 September the Virgen del Tovar is celebrated with a procession from the parish church to her hermitage; the calendar is opened by San Isidro, on 15 May, and Santa Justa, on 17 July.
