What to see and do in Bustillo del Oro

Bustillo del Oro
Village
Bustillo del Oro is a village in Zamora province, in the Alfoz de Toro area, 20 kilometres from that city. Its origin goes back to prehistory, from which comes the quartzite Palaeolithic hand-axe or biface found in 1963 on the hill of San Pelayo; as a medieval settlement it was resettled by the kings of León, and is already documented in 1107 under the name Bustiello. It came to have a hospital for the sick and for travellers and two parish churches, one of which, San Pelayo, became a hermitage in the 17th century. The appellation del Oro apparently comes from a corruption of the old designation of Toro, whose name it bore in the 13th century. With 75 inhabitants, it preserves the Church of the Assumption, which holds five altarpieces, the main one carved between 1602 and 1620 by Antonio de Ribera.
