What to see and do in Villalube

Villalube
Village
Villalube is a village in Zamora province, in Castile and León, with 143 inhabitants and 40.09 km² of municipal area. Founded during the medieval resettlement by the Leonese kings, it originated from two separate settlements, Villa Lupi and Villa Lobos et Linguari, and its history was tied to the Monastery of Moreruela ever since King Ferdinand II of León donated the Barzolema estate (pago) in 1180. It preserves mud-brick dovecotes topped with brick, underground cellars with presses and wine vats, and a stone wayside cross at the entrance; it venerates the Virgen del Templo, a devotion inherited from the Knights Templar.

Monument
Of the seventeenth century, it was damaged by a fire in 1935 and restored afterwards; it holds a tabernacle of that same seventeenth century and a sculpture by the Zamoran artist Ricardo Flecha, beside the stone cross at the entrance.

Curiosity
Along the riverbank are lined up dovecotes raised in mud with decorative brick finishes; beside them are preserved wine cellars with their presses, vats and barrels from the era of the local vineyard.
The spring of Barzolema
Nature
Fernando II of León handed over in 1180 the territory of Barzolema to the monastery of Moreruela; the spring that keeps that name rises on the edge of the village protected by an ashlar stone vault.
