What to see and do in Vezdemarbán

Vezdemarbán
Village
Vezdemarbán is a village in Zamora province, in Castile and León, with 423 inhabitants, set in the midst of a dry-farmed cereal plain. Its name, with Mozarabic echoes — Maruan —, has been documented since the year 1005 in the archives of the Monastery of Sahagún, as part of the resettlements undertaken by the kings of León; in the mid-11th century it belonged to Fronilde Obequiz, who donated it to the Monastery of San Salvador de Villacet, today Belver de los Montes. Its 16th-century church of San Miguel was rebuilt after the fire that devastated it in 1831, and on the outskirts stands the 18th-century sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Cuesta.

Monument
Raised in the eighteenth century over an earlier fabric, it holds a Romanesque image of the Virgin and a main altarpiece by Felipe Durán; its festival, on 8 September, is the largest in the whole municipality.

Historical milestone
The church of San Miguel Arcángel, of the sixteenth century, was devastated by a fire in 1831 and had to be rebuilt in the nineteenth century; it preserves a beautiful sixteenth-century parish cross saved from the flames.
