San Pedro de Latarce
Village
San Pedro de Latarce is a town in the Tierra de Campos of Valladolid, on the banks of the río Sequillo, of Roman origin as an advance post in the Cantabrian Wars on the edge of the montes Torozos. It was a border place between Castile and León: in 1183 the Treaty of Fresno-Lavandera left it under Leonese jurisdiction, and Alfonso IX gave it to his wife Berenguela of Castile after their divorce in 1204. In the early 13th century the Templars received it in exchange with Alfonso IX and made it the head of a bailía (a Templar administrative division), one of their main possessions; when the Temple was dissolved in the 14th century, its property passed to the Order of Saint John. Of its castle the oval wall of concrete and rounded stones survives, now in ruins. In the mid-19th century it had 1,153 inhabitants, and in 1920 it reached 1,793; today it has around 430.
