What to see and do in Torregamones

Torregamones
Village
Torregamones is a village of 225 inhabitants in the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, facing the Portuguese town of Miranda do Douro, from which it is separated by the river Duero. Its territory is protected both as the Arribes del Duero natural park and as the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve, and is home to birds such as the griffon vulture, black stork, peregrine falcon, Egyptian vulture, red-billed chough, eagle owl, golden eagle and Bonelli's eagle. Its name comes from the tower (torre) and from the gamones, a plant abundant in the area; it preserves an ethnographic heritage of chiviteros and mills, now integrated into a hiking route, as well as the remains of the Fuerte Nuevo, a defensive military structure from the seventeenth century.
The route of the six mills
Monument
Los Payeros, Los Domingos, Nuevo, Matarranas, La Azurera and Los Luciés: six restored mills string together a path across the municipal district, beside the chiviteros, shepherds' stone huts with vegetal roofing.

Nature
The municipal district, protected as a biosphere reserve, Natura 2000 Network and natural park, hosts griffon vultures, black storks, peregrine falcons and golden eagles above the cliffs of the border Duero.
The relic of San Ildefonso
Historical milestone
In 1496 a relic of the saint arrived in the village, a thumb, which explains its double festival on 23 January and 26 May; the Miranda dam, completed in 1961, later changed the landscape of the municipal district.
