What to see and do in Gamones

Gamones
Village
Gamones is a hamlet of 89 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Sayago, close to the Portuguese border and to the Arribes del Duero natural park, declared in 2015 a transboundary biosphere reserve under the name Meseta Ibérica. Its origin is linked to Roman times, when the calzada Mirandesa, which joined Zamora with Miranda, passed through the village, recalled today in its street La Calzada; in the Middle Ages it was integrated into the Kingdom of León, which repopulated it, and its first written reference dates from the thirteenth century. Two streams, Los Arroyos and La Rivera, formerly fed several mills. Its granite church, with a T-shaped floor plan, holds a small thirteenth-century Theotokos and mural paintings.
The Theotokos of the Purísima Concepción
Monument
The granite church, of T-shaped plan divided into three bays, holds a thirteenth-century image of the Virgin, a Pietà of the seventeenth and wall paintings; the hermitage of Santa Eulalia preserves a Christ carved in the sixteenth.
The asphodel that gave the village its name
Curiosity
Tradition attributes to the Cistercian monks the introduction of the asphodel in the middle of the twelfth century, and from that plant the place took its name; Miguel Delibes set his novel El tesoro in a fictional Gamones.
