What to see and do in Villadepera

Villadepera
Village
Village in the comarca of Sayago, in Zamora, situated in the Arribes del Duero, an area triply protected as the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve, a Natura 2000 site and a natural park of Castile and León, with the presence of black stork, golden eagle and griffon vulture; it connects with Pino del Oro by the bridge of Requejo and has 165 inhabitants. Its origin is probably Roman, linked to the river transport of malachite and cassiterite along the Duero, and beneath the present-day road runs the Roman calzada that joined Ledesma with Villadepera. In the Middle Ages it was repopulated by the Leonese kings as part of the repopulations of Sayago. Its church of the Asunción displays a main altarpiece covered in gold leaf with bas-reliefs of the Annunciation.
The bridge of Requejo
Monument
Designed by the engineer José Eugenio Ribera Dutaste and built between 1913 and 1914, this bridge-viaduct over the Duero canyon finally joined Sayago with Aliste, with a span of one hundred and twenty metres and a height of ninety; before it, the only link between the two areas was a boat that crossed between Pino del Oro and Villadepera, hauled by ropes. It was inaugurated on 15 September 1914 by Abilio Calderón, director general of Public Works, and at the time it was the bridge with the longest span and also the greatest height over a river in the whole of Spain.
The tin mine of El Carrascal
Curiosity
Worked as early as Roman times and again in the seventies, this tin mine is today walked by paths that cross centuries-old oak woods in a municipal district protected as a natural park and biosphere reserve.
