What to see and do in Luelmo

Luelmo
Village
Luelmo is a livestock-farming village in Zamora province with 148 inhabitants, with the hamlet of Monumenta, in the north-central part of the comarca of Sayago, at the crossing of the old calzadas from Pino to Ledesma and from Moral to Fermoselle. Its name goes back to the early Middle Ages and derives from the elm — "uelmo" in the old Leonese dialects, whence L'uelmo — following the custom of other Sayago villages of taking the name of a tree, as Carbellino did from carballo or Fresno from the ash; today local speech uses "negrillo", and the elms themselves are disappearing due to Dutch elm disease. The images from the vanished ermita of San Gregorio were moved to the church of Santa Catalina. In 1966 it joined with Villamor de la Ladre to share a clerk, and in 1972 its residents rejected incorporation into Bermillo de Sayago.

Curiosity
The parish preserves an azure stone with five lines of ancient writing, coming from the vanished hermitage of San Gregorio that stood on the Teso Santo, today replaced by that of Santa Catalina.

Nature
The place name comes from the elms that abounded in the municipal district, today threatened by Dutch elm disease; the municipality extends over 36 square kilometres at 773 metres of altitude, nine kilometres from Bermillo.
