What to see and do in Villardiegua de la Ribera

Villardiegua de la Ribera
Village
Villardiegua de la Ribera is a hamlet of 106 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, settled beside the Duero in the comarca of the arribes, within the territory protected as the Meseta Ibérica transboundary biosphere reserve and the Arribes del Duero natural park. The village is known for its Vettone boar statue from the second Iron Age, popularly called "la yegua" (the mare), brought from the nearby castro of San Mamede or Peña Redonda, which still keeps another such piece. Documented since 1175 as Villaryegua, it was one of the largest archpriestships of Sayago, with some fifty parishes under its jurisdiction, a legacy that explains its religious heritage: the parish church of the Natividad de la Santísima Virgen and the ermitas of San Roque and San Mamed.
The Mula of Villardiegua
Monument
This Vettonian verraco from the castro of San Mamede measures 2.10 metres long by 0.74 wide; despite its masculine features it is called la Mula or la Yegua, and from that name the village's own seems to come.
The archpriesthood of Villardiegua
Historical milestone
Cited for the first time in 1175, the place headed one of the largest archpriesthoods of Sayago, with close to half a hundred parishes; in the sixteenth century the censuses called it Villar de la Yegua.
