What to see and do in Moral de Sayago

Moral de Sayago
Village
Moral de Sayago is a municipality in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Sayago, with 265 inhabitants including the hamlet of Abelón; it lies 42 kilometres from the provincial capital, in south-western Zamora. Its name, like that of other Sayago villages — Carbellino, Luelmo, Fresno —, refers to a tree, in this case the black mulberry, of concejo tradition beside the rural churches. Part of its territory lies within the Arribes del Duero natural park, also protected as the Meseta Ibérica biosphere reserve and Natura 2000 network, home to birds such as the griffon vulture and golden eagle. The municipality is also famous for its numerous water mills, now linked by a trail; in the district of Coneo, fragments of Roman stelae can be seen reused in the walls of the houses.

Activity
The municipal district preserves a great many water mills and a tourist route has been laid out that takes in them all; the village, together with Abelón, brings together 265 inhabitants at fewer than four per square kilometre.

Curiosity
At the beginning of the twentieth century a Roman necropolis was discovered here whose stone fragments ended up reused in the village houses; the old Mirandesa road passed through the municipal district.
