Roelos de Sayago
Village
Roelos de Sayago is a livestock-farming village of 133 inhabitants located at the southern end of the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, separated from the province of Salamanca by the río Tormes, now widened by the Almendra reservoir. It is documented for the first time in 1176, as Oriolos or Orriolos, when its church was granted, together with those of Carbellino and Estacas, in prestimonio by the bishop of Zamora to Pedro Juanes; the name Roelos was already fixed by the sixteenth century. At the site of Rita Becerro the remains of an old castro are preserved, one of the earliest settlements of the comarca, favoured by the proximity of the Duero and Tormes rivers and the abundance of rock. Its economy today is based on the raising of cattle, sheep and pigs.
