What to see and do in Villaseco de los Reyes

Villaseco de los Reyes
Village
Villaseco de los Reyes is a municipality in the Tierra de Ledesma district, in the province of Salamanca, whose 136 square kilometres are divided among five settlements: Villaseco itself, Berganciano, El Campo de Ledesma, Gejo de los Reyes, and Moscosa y Gusende. Founded during the medieval repopulations by the kings of León, it was included in the jurisdiction of Ledesma once Ferdinand II of León created its alfoz in the 12th century; Berganciano's name recalls settlers who came from Braganza. The municipality's current place name comes from the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes hermitage, which the historian Manuel Gómez-Moreno attributed to the late 13th century, built at the wish of the infante Don Sancho Pérez, lord of Ledesma and grandson of Alfonso X the Wise. It has 296 inhabitants.
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes
Monument
Manuel Gómez-Moreno attributed its construction to the end of the thirteenth century, at the wish of the Infante Sancho Pérez, lord of Ledesma and grandson of Alfonso X. From this hermitage the municipality took the suffix «de los Reyes» by which it is known today.

Curiosity
The annexed village of Berganciano is documented as Bregançiano, a direct reference to its resettlement with people who came from Bragança, «Bregancia» in Leonese; neighbouring Gejo de los Reyes was called Seyxu in the thirteenth century and Xexo in the sixteenth.
