What to see and do in Pereruela

Pereruela
Village
Pereruela is a municipality of 499 inhabitants in the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, which also brings together the hamlets of Arcillo, La Cernecina, Malillos, Sobradillo de Palomares, Sogo, San Román de los Infantes, La Tuda, Pueblica de Campeán and Las Enillas. It is famous for its refractory-clay pottery — cooking pots, crucibles and kilns, the work of the potter Lucas Porto Carnero — which in the nineteenth century reached the world's fairs of Paris and Vienna. The calzadas of Fermoselle and Miranda cross its territory, and the village is also the usual gateway to the Arribes del Duero natural park from the city of Zamora, whose canyon offers here spots such as the Salto del Ladrón, the peña de los Danzadores and several aceñas, now half submerged in the Villalcampo reservoir.

Food and drink
The village's women potters model, with clays rich in quartz and mica, casseroles able to withstand the direct fire of the oven; the roasts made in them are inseparable from the Zamoran recipe book.

Curiosity
In the nineteenth century the pottery of Pereruela, a craft traditionally of women, came to be exhibited in Paris and Vienna with pieces by the potter Lucas Porto Carnero, which gave international fame to the village's clay.
The church of Santa Eufemia
Monument
It combines Romanesque and Gothic elements and holds a sixteenth-century altarpiece of San Antón and an eighteenth-century main altarpiece with scenes of the Passion; it presides over a municipality spread over ten settlements.

Nature
The municipal district borders the natural park of Arribes del Duero, where the river opens deep canyons; the old water mills that ground on its banks were left partly beneath the waters of the Villalcampo reservoir.
