Villaseco del Pan
Village
Villaseco del Pan is a village of 201 inhabitants in the Tierra del Pan region, in the province of Zamora, wedged between the Duero and the Esla at the start of the Arribes, 22 kilometres from the provincial capital and 43 from the Portuguese town of Miranda do Douro; it lives from farming and livestock. Resettled in the Middle Ages within the Kingdom of León, it is first mentioned at the end of the 12th century: in 1172 it appears among the towns in a deed of donation from Alfonso I of Portugal to Pedro Menéndez, and in 1174 King Ferdinand II of León gave Pelayo Tabladelo vineyards in the village; in 1181 Pedro Fernández donated to the Cathedral Chapter of Zamora the thirds of certain local tithes. It later became part of the Zamora Partido del Pan.
