Almaraz de Duero
Village
Almaraz de Duero is a village in the province of Zamora, with 386 inhabitants, whose name, of Arabic origin, al-mahrat, means tilled land; until the early twentieth century it was known as Almaraz del Pan, after the comarca of the Tierra del Pan to which it belongs. Already inhabited before the arrival of the Romans, probably by the Vaccaei people, it preserves the rock-cut sanctuary of San Pelayo, a sacred place since prehistory with zoomorphic marks carved into the rock. Under Roman rule the tin mines scattered across the territory were worked, from which coins and pottery still survive; it also preserves a Roman fountain in the centre of the settlement. The first written mention of the village dates from 1175, when King Ferdinand II of León granted a fuero to its settlers.
