What to see and do in Peñausende

Peñausende
Village
Peñausende is a municipality in the comarca of Sayago, in the province of Zamora, made up of the localities of Figueruela de Sayago, Peñausende and Tamame, bordering the Salamancan Tierra de Ledesma. Over 95 km² it gathers 386 inhabitants. At the foot of a crag crowned with vertical granite walls stand the remains of its castle, belonging to the Order of Santiago, which played a defensive role during the Reconquista and is today a viewpoint over the province; it also preserves an incomplete rollo jurisdiccional, a former pillory. Its parish church, dedicated to San Martín de Tours, was built in the late eleventh or early twelfth century and was heightened in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, which gives it a Romanesque style transitioning to Gothic. Kaolin, the popular white clay, is extracted from the territory.
The castle of Peñausende
Monument
The ruins of the fortress are the village's chief landmark and work as a natural viewpoint over the comarca; the place already appears as Penna in the resettlements following the battle of Simancas of 939.
The kaolin of Tamame and the granite of the cathedral
Curiosity
At Tamame kaolin is still extracted, the white clay of the municipal district, and from the granite quarries of Peñausende came the stone with which the cathedral of Zamora and several buildings of the provincial capital were raised.
The wine of the Tierra del Vino at Peñausende
Food and drink
The vineyards of Peñausende, Tamame and Figueruela de Sayago, the three settlements of this municipality of 386 inhabitants at the southern edge of the Sayago area, are covered by the Tierra del Vino de Zamora designation of origin, which brings together 46 municipalities in Zamora province and ten in Salamanca province. The protected wines, white, clarete, rosé and red, are made mainly from malvasía, moscatel de grano menudo and verdejo among the whites, and tempranillo among the reds. The designation, recognised as a vino de la tierra in 2000, became a vino de calidad in 2004 and achieved denominación de origen status in 2007. Peñausende, the municipal capital, also preserves the remains of a castle of the Order of Santiago converted into a viewpoint, and the church of San Martín de Tours, Romanesque in transition to Gothic.
