The wine of the Tierra del Vino at Peñausende Food and drink · Peñausende, Sayago, Zamora Image of Peñausende, not of the place itself. The vineyards of Peñausende, Tamame and Figueruela de Sayago, the three settlements of this municipality of 386 inhabitants at the southern edge of the Sayago area, are covered by the Tierra del Vino de Zamora designation of origin, which brings together 46 municipalities in Zamora province and ten in Salamanca province. The protected wines, white, clarete, rosé and red, are made mainly from malvasía, moscatel de grano menudo and verdejo among the whites, and tempranillo among the reds. The designation, recognised as a vino de la tierra in 2000, became a vino de calidad in 2004 and achieved denominación de origen status in 2007. Peñausende, the municipal capital, also preserves the remains of a castle of the Order of Santiago converted into a viewpoint, and the church of San Martín de Tours, Romanesque in transition to Gothic.
