What to see and do in Santiz

Santiz
Village
Santiz is a municipality in the province of Salamanca with about 225 inhabitants, located at the northern edge of the Tierra de Ledesma district, bordering the Sayago area of Zamora, with which it shares landscape, history and traditions. Its name comes from the Latin Sanctus Thyrsus, Saint Thyrsus, a hagiotoponym taken from the parish's patron saint. The village sits at the foot of the Teso Santo, 984 metres high and the highest point in the area, where pre-Roman remains from the 6th century BC once appeared. The hills of the municipality, covered with holm oaks, cork oaks, oaks and Portuguese oaks amid French lavender and rockrose, are home to the largest cork-oak grove in the province of Salamanca and the so-called alcornoque gordo de la Calahorra, nearly six hundred years old, included in the Ruta de las Catedrales Vivas (Route of the Living Cathedrals).
The boundary settlement between two dioceses
Historical milestone
Disputed between the bishoprics of Zamora and Salamanca, the settlement was the subject of a bull by Pope Alexander III in 1170; the boundary was not settled until 1185, when the two chapters delimited their jurisdictions and Santiz remained in the diocese of Zamora.
The Teso Santo wind farm
Curiosity
Twenty-five wind turbines of two megawatts each, on 78-metre steel tronco-conical towers, add up to fifty megawatts on the heights of the Teso Santo, a hill of about 984 metres that marks the boundary between the provinces of Zamora and Salamanca and whose administrative summit belongs to the municipality of Peñausende. While the Zamoran slope was reforested in the mid-20th century with Scots pine, the Salamancan slope, which separates the comarca of Sayago from the Tierra de Ledesma, to which Santiz belongs, kept its original ecosystem until land consolidation and the wind farm itself transformed it in recent decades. It is the same hill where pre-Roman remains from the 6th century BC were found, beside the old Roman road of Ledesma.
