What to see and do in Fresno de Sayago

Fresno de Sayago
Village
Fresno de Sayago is a village in Zamora province with 137 inhabitants, which also includes the hamlets of Los Maniles and Mogátar, set in a gentle depression among the dehesas of Carbellino, Paredes and Villoria. Settlement here goes back to the Bronze Age, and in Roman times there were three settlements here, the most important in the dehesa of Paredes, where the sculpture of the Celtic goddess Bane was found, still kept by the village today. In the Middle Ages it was integrated into the Kingdom of León and belonged as an ecclesiastical possession to the city of Zamora until the mid-nineteenth century, with the status of a town divided into the districts of Obispo and Rey. Its church of San Miguel was rebuilt in 1798 with materials from the ruined ermitas of the area.

Monument
Built between 1489 and 1498 by Andrés de Grado, a canon of the cathedral, and reformed in 1798, it preserves the lines of the original Romanesque parish church in the centre of the village's urban centre.

Curiosity
At the Roman sites of El Cardal and Nava Las Iglesias, in the dehesa of Paredes, pottery, tiles and sculptures of the goddess Bane have appeared, an indigenous divinity little documented in the west of the peninsula.
