What to see and do in Villalcampo

Villalcampo
Village
Villalcampo is a municipality in the comarca of Aliste, in western Zamora province and near the border with Portugal, made up of the hamlets of Villalcampo, Carbajosa and Salto de Villalcampo, between the Villalcampo and Ricobayo reservoirs; it has 380 inhabitants. Its territory, protected as the Arribes del Duero natural park and the Meseta Ibérica biosphere reserve, is home to birds such as the griffon vulture, the black stork and the golden eagle. The earliest human remains, from the Iron Age, correspond to the deserted site of Santiago, from which came a pre-Roman verraco (stone boar) now set above a window lintel in Calle La Iglesia. In the Middle Ages, already within the Kingdom of León, its proximity to Portugal placed it in conflict between the two kingdoms after Portugal's independence in 1143.
The Roman steles of Villalcampo
Monument
The works on the dam brought to light a notable funerary epigraphic assemblage, with stelae coming mostly from the castro of Santiago; today they are kept in the rooms of the Museo de Zamora.
The church of San Lorenzo
Monument
A parish church of Renaissance design that presides over the village; it is completed by the hermitage of the Encarnación, whose procession is held every 11 September, and the old bridge of La Vega over the stream.
The charter of Alfonso IX to Villalcampo
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León granted Villalcampo a fuero of its own in 1212; already in the twentieth century the municipality grew by taking in in 1969 the place of Carbajosa, coming from the vanished district of Cerezal de Aliste.
Between the reservoirs of Villalcampo and Ricobayo
Nature
The municipal district is set between the two reservoirs that dam the Duero and the Esla, in a landscape with triple protection — natural park, Natura 2000 Network and biosphere reserve — where the black stork flies.
