What to see and do in Muga de Sayago

Muga de Sayago
Village
Muga de Sayago is a village in the province of Zamora, in the comarca of Sayago, with 313 inhabitants, belonging to the former cuadrilla of Bermillo. Its name comes from a proto-Basque root, mūga or mŏga, "boundary stone" or limit between territories, and local tradition also links it to "muda" (change), since the present site was formed after the abandonment, due to an epidemic, of several nearby settlements. On its territory Acheulean quartzite sites, Neolithic axes and a Roman sarcophagus, now turned into a drinking trough, have appeared, along with other Roman remains; tradition also attributes to the Romans the well-preserved Fuente del Toral. In the seventeenth century the village was sacked by Portuguese troops, and it came to have five ermitas and a good number of stone crosses.
The murals of the hermitage of Fernandiel
Monument
This small rectangular hermitage, divided into three bays by slightly pointed arches, preserves wall paintings of the middle of the sixteenth century by two different hands and an image of the Virgin carved in 1568 by the sculptor Falcote.
The plundering of the Portuguese Restoration War
Historical milestone
During the Portuguese War of Restoration the village was sacked by the troops that crossed the border; in the fifteenth century the church had exercised lordship over the dehesas of Fernandiel and Sobradillo.
The hornazo of Easter Monday
Food and drink
On Easter Monday the residents climb to Fernandiel to collect the Virgin and eat in the fields omelette, chorizo and hornazo before dancing the jota and the charro; it is the village's gastronomic event of the year.
